Sailor Neptune derives her power from the planet Neptune. Her powers are water based and her guardian is the Ocean. Her original mission, along with Sailor Uranus and Sailor Pluto, was to protect the solar system from outside invaders. She and the other two outer senshi were given powers far greater than those of the inner senshi. At the same time, the outer senshi, during the silver millenium, were loners, left to guard the solar system alone.

We get our first glimpse of Sailor Neptune during episode 89, the final episode of the SMR season. The episode serves as a wrap-up of the highlights of the first and second series, along with a preview of the new series to come. During this preview, the inner senshi discuss the presence of two "new" senshi. Only a dark sillioute of Sailor Neptune and her partner Sailor Uranus is shown. The first time Sailor Neptune is shown in any detail is in episode 92. Here we begin to see a more detailed version of her attack, Deep Submerge.

Sailor Neptune often introduces herself after Sailor Uranus. Uranus says, "Hereld by the new age, I am Sailor Uranus, acting gorgeously." Neptune follows with "And the same, Sailor Neptune, acting gracefully." These short introductions change from episode to episode, although the point of the speech is the same.

As the series progresses, we learn more about Sailor Neptune and Uranus's mission. They are looking for the three sacred talismans, the Aqua Mirror, the Space Sword, and the Garnet Orb, which are trapped inside the pure crystal hearts of three individuals. The catch is that the pure souls possessing the talismans will die once the objects are removed. Sailor Neptune and Sailor Uranus are willing to make this sacrifice to save the world from the messiah of silence. Sailor Moon, however, is not.

It is for this reason that the outer senshi view the inner senshi as a burden. To them, the inner senshi cannot see that the sacrifice of a few to save many is necessary to rid the world of evil. Sailor Neptune and Sailor Uranus often tell the inner senshi to get lost and let them complete their mission, however, they offer the inners little information on that mission, claiming that it's none of their business.

The two senshi are quite fond of Usagi, however, and during episode 101, Usagi's pure heart is the target of the deathbusters, the enemy in SMS. The two senshi struggle to accept that fact that they might have to sacrifice their friend. Usagi's heart shines exceptionally bright, and both the enemy and the outer senshi believe she holds a talisman. However, this isn't the case. The brightness of Usagi's heart is merely a measure of her purity. She doesn't hold a talisman and the search goes on.

In episode 110, the story of how Michiru and Haruka met and became sailor senshi is revealed. Michiru has already been awakened when she meets Haruka, a track star, at school through a mutual friend. Michiru's interest in Haruka is evident from the beginning, however, Haruka pushes Michiru away and tells the girl to leave her alone. Michiru approaches Haruka later on, telling her that she must be feeling what Michiru herself feels. Haruka, however, is not ready to accept her fate just then. Finally, Haruka is attacked by a youma. Her henshin stick appears along with Michiru, who warns her not to take it. Michiru transforms into Sailor Neptune and defeats the youma. She tells Haruka that she was happy when she found out that Haruka was Sailor Uranus, her destined partner for a mission to save the world. But Michiru didn't want Haruka to be forced into the life that she had chosen. Haruka, however, accepted her destiny.

This episode marks the first time the transformation sequences for Sailor Neptune and Sailor Uranus are shown. Sailor Neptune's transformation, Neptune Planet Power, Make-up, begins with her henshin stick. It then flashes to her spinning in a circle with her henshin stick straight out. As her stick circles her body a wall of water rises behind it, eventually surrounding her naked body. We then see Sailor Neptune flip her hair back, followed by a lip color change, and then ending with a nice pose.

In episode 113, Michiru and Haruka, discover that Usagi is Sailor Moon, and likewise, she learns that they are Sailor Neptune and Uranus. Trapped in a parking garage with Eudial, one of the witches 5, Usagi transforms in order to save Minako's pure crystal heart. Michiru and Haruka realize that they must do the same if they expect to keep a potential talisman out of Eudial's hands. Although, Minako's heart is not a talisman, the damage has been done. The senshi's identities have been revealed, not only to each other, but to Eudial as well.

At this point the relationship of the inner and outer senshi, both in senshi form as well as when untransformed, changes drastically. The inners still cannot understand why Sailor Neptune and Uranus would allow for the sacrifice of innocents, and the outers still view the inners as a burden.

In Episode 114, the talismans appear. Eudial uses a computer program to discover the identities of two of the three talisman holders. She places a call to Michiru and Haruka, inviting them to meet her at a cathedral. She tells them that she has the talisman holders there. Michiru and Haruka feel that Eudial is telling the truth, because they themselves, through intuition, felt that a talisman would be revealed that day.

Sailor Neptune and Sailor Uranus arrive at the cathedral after taking Usagi's transformation brooch. Within minutes they not only discover that Eudial has set a trap for them, but that they are the talisman holders that she claimed to have. Uranus claims that this cannot be true. They are not pure; their hands are dirtied by their mission. Eudial points her heart removing gun at Uranus, and Neptune flips out. Driven by a desire to save the woman she loves, she crosses Eudial's bridge and is shot many times by bullets. She reaches Eudial who turns and shoots her in the heart, revealing first her crystal heart, then the Aqua Mirror.

Uranus is shocked to see that her partner does indeed hold a talisman. Before Eudial has a chance to take the talisman from Haruka's body, however, Usagi arrives and knocks her off the bridge. Uranus returns Usagi's brooch and asks her to find the last talisman. Usagi begs Uranus not to take her own life. She claims that she can save the world without the talismans. Uranus pretends to believe her for a moment, before knocking her out of the way, and shooting herself with the gun. The second Talisman, the Space Sword, appears.

Uranus and Neptune then die, or come about as close to it as humanly possible. Without their crystal hearts they cannot sustain life for very long.

Later in episode 115, Meiou Setsuna appears for the second time and reveals not only that she is Sailor Pluto, but that she holds the third talisman, the Garnet Orb. Combining the power of the three talismans, Neptune and Uranus are revived, their hearts are returned, and the Holy Grail appears. Neptune smiles at Uranus and says that it appeared no sacrifices were needed after all.

Sailor Neptune and Sailor Uranus, along with Sailor Pluto, find they have a new mission now - to find the Messiah. Although they allow Sailor Moon to keep the Holy Grail because it allows her to double transform to Super Sailor Moon, they claim that she is not messiah because she is weakened when using the Grail.

The outer senshi also accept the mission of stopping the Messiah of Silence from awakening. They suspect that Tomoe Hotaru is Sailor Saturn, the senshi of death. They believe that if they kill her, the world will be saved. If she awakens, however, and she holds the sacred cup, she will destory the world and bring the silence.

In episode 117, the story of the outer senshi is revealed to Tuxedo Kamen. The outers explain who they are and why they were given more power than the inner senshi. They explain that the inner senshi aren't strong enough to complete the mission that they had been given. They tell Kamen that the inners will only get in their way because the inners don't have what it takes to make sacrifices. Tuxedo Kamen asks why the outers are telling him this, and they reply that they felt he would understand.

This once again brings the outer senshi into odds with the inner senshi, who have befriended Hotaru. The outers attempt to convience Usagi that Hotaru is dangerous, however, Usagi will not listen, and does everything in her power to prevent the outers from harming Hotaru, especially after it is revealed that Hotaru is truely Sailor Saturn.

During this part of the series, we see very little of Sailor Neptune. She, and the other outers, show up usually in time to see the inner senshi defeat the daimon and save the crystal heart of the current victim. Besides voicing their opinions that Hotaru must die, not much else is shown involving the trio.

In episode 123, Mistress 9, the Messiah of Silence, awakens inside Hotaru's body. Sailor Neptune and Sailor Uranus are shocked to find that the Messiah of Silence wasn't Sailor Saturn after all. The outer senshi decide to launch an attack on Mugen High, the location of the Deathbusters Nest and Mistress 9. They arrive by helicopter, which is blown to bits by the daimon's guarding the school. Sailor Pluto uses her forbidden attack, Time Stop, to save Neptune and Uranus from death, placing them inside the deathbuster's nest, before allowing herself to be destroyed in the explosion.

Shocked at the supposed death of their friend, the pair vows to destroy the deathbusters and head into the building. Here the pair fight with Professor Tomoe's daimon containers. Just as they are about to be defeated, Sailor Pluto's voice echoes in the air, "Talismans." The Aqua Mirror and the Space Sword appear and Neptune and Uranus use them to kill the daimon and continue futher into the nest.

They arrive just in time to find that Mistress 9 has kidnapped Sailor Moon and is attempting to get the Holy Grail from her. Sailor Neptune and Uranus tell Sailor Moon that if she hands over the grail all is lost. They tell her they will never forgive her if she does so and that she has no right to make that decision because she is not the messiah.

Sailor Moon, however, is convience by Hotaru's voice to hand over the grail. Once this happens, Mistress 9, who had only been using the child, suppress Hotaru once again, and claims to have killed her. She destroys the Holy Grail, making the passageway for Pharoah 90 to enter to world complete.

Here Sailor Neptune and Uranus accept defeat. The grail has been destroyed and there seems to be no stopping Mistress 9 and Pharoah 90 from exacting the silence over the Earth. Sailor Moon, however, refuses to give up. She believe in Hotaru, and eventually this believe turns into a reality, as Sailor Saturn destroys Mistress 9 and awakens inside Hotaru's body.

Sailor Saturn tell Sailor Moon that she will sacrifice herself to save the world. Sailor Moon tells Saturn to let her be the sacrifice, but Saturn points her glaive at Moon's face and tell Sailor Moon that without the holy grail she does not have enough power to double henshin. Only Super Sailor Moon would have enough power to stop the silence. Then she backflips into the growing silence and begins to battle with Pharoah 90.

At this point, Sailor Neptune and Sailor Uranus are furious with Sailor Moon for causing the silence to happen. Sailor Moon begins to cry, desperately trying to henshin into Super Sailor Moon. Finally, after a number of tries, the other senshi lend Sailor Moon their power and she becomes Super Sailor Moon. She leaps into the silence to help Sailor Saturn. Because she does this, Saturn is reborn and Super Sailor Moon is left holding a baby when the silence and pharaoh 90 are destroyed.

In episode 126, Sailor Neptune and Sailor Uranus take baby Hotaru from Super Sailor Moon's arms and leave. They eventually return the baby to Professor Tomoe, who remembers nothing about his time with the deathbusters. Then the pair prepare for their final mission.

Michiru and Haruka tell Usagi that she is unfit to be the future Neo-Queen Serenity and that her actions during the battle with the deathbusters almost destroyed the world. She tells them that she might be a crybaby but she feels what she did was right and she asks the pair to change their position. They counter by telling Usagi that she must make them change their position. They transform into Sailor Neptune and Sailor Uranus. The other inner senshi quickly transform, telling the two outers that if it's a dual they want a dual they'll get. The inners completely support Usagi's decision and want to make the outer senshi pay for insulting her.

Usagi doesn't want to see anyone fight, and she too transforms into Sailor Moon. Tuxedo Kamen tells the inner senshi that Sailor Moon must fight this battle alone, and the inners conceed. Thus, the battle between Sailor Moon, Sailor Neptune, and Sailor Uranus begins.

At first, the two-on-one battle clearly favors the outer senshi. They attack Sailor Moon with a fury and eventually, Sailor Neptune comes up from behind Moon and grabs her arms, holding her place. Uranus then dashes forward to finish off Sailor Moon with a head on physical attack. At the last moment, however, Sailor Moon's brooch flashes with light, she escapes, and the two outer senshi go tumbling down as Uranus crashes into Neptune.

Immediately after, Sailor Neptune and Sailor Uranus bow to Sailor Moon, who at this point is utterly confused. The outer senshi thank Sailor Moon for showing them her true power. They then tell her that they have completed their final mission and have found the true messiah. To this Sailor Moon asks who the messiah is. Neptune and Uranus simply smile at each other before leaving.

The pair then leaves town in Haruka's car, driving off to into the sunset.
