The planet Neptune is named after the Roman god Neptune. Neptune, also known as Posiden in Ancient Greece was the God of the Sea, Horses, and Earthquakes.

After the battle of the Gods with the titans, Posiden and his brothers Hades and Zeus drew lots to see who would rule over the Heavens, the oceans, and the underworld. Posiden drew the Sea. He lives in a castle on the bottom of the Ocean and rides a chariot pulled by Horses, his chosen animal.Posiden's wife was Amphitrite, granddaughter of the titan, Ocean.

Posiden had the power to make the seas calmly or rough, and he decided who on the seas lived or died. He was revered and feared because many of the civilizations present around the Mediterranean Sea used the water as a primary means of travel and trade.

Michiru uses the voice of the sea to aid her intuition when an enemy appears. Her connection to the sea is obvious throughout the show. When the sea is rough, indicating the God Neptune is upset, something is wrong. When the sea is calm, everything is well.

Neptune's powers are also water based, an obvious connection to Greek and Roman mythology. Her attack, deep submerge, calls on the planet of neptune, surrounded by water, to complete the attack.

Michiru's personality also includes these water traits. She loves to swim and has a strong connection to the ocean. In one scene, she is seen holding a sea shell up to her ear, letting herself escape to the sound of the waves beating upon the coast.
